You know you’re in the right profession when you can pull out pictures like these and all the memories of a particular class of students comes flooding back. And even in consideration of the most challenging and tiring moments–working through the late nights of grading and planning, or a student (or three) having a particularly bad day–what emerges most clearly is the single thought: that was so worth it; they are worth it.
I am a teacher in the Boston Public Schools and currently work as a peer assistant in the district (which means I travel to multiple schools in my work with other teachers and their students). As a teacher in smaller school environments, ranging from an alternative school setting in North Carolina, to a New England private school to two Boston public small schools, I’ve seen firsthand how critical school culture is to the success of students (and adults) in a building. That understanding has been deepened over the past few years as I’ve seen–this time as a relative outsider to many school buildings that I visit–how different each school can feel.
I’m excited for the opportunity to serve as a co-chair of this professional culture subcommittee. You can read more about me by clicking here.
