Current Events
Although this article isn’t recent (September 2010), I am having my students tie our last court case, Brown v. The Board of Education to today’s public education system.
Since I have used part of Eyes on the Prize (the Little Rock Nine clips) I’m hoping to move into grassroots organizing and possibly look at what different groups are doing now to address the inequality in our education system.
I want my students to see that school integration started with Brown, but was pushed and only implemented due to grassroots organizing, and that the work is still ongoing.

Marcie, here is the issue brief that I used when I taught this similar topic, along with the guided worksheet I gave my kids.

Nice, Marcie. At one point, Harvard housed the Civil Rights Project (since moved to UCLA, I believe) and they had some issue briefs out that addressed this similar topic. Since I can’t add attachments to this comment, I’ll put them at the bottom of your post just for reference. I think as teachers we were thinking the same things!
