Henry Mahegan: End of Unit 2 Project
Well, I hope this doesn’t sound like a cop out, but I decided to go in a completely different direction with the project scheduled for the end of Unit 2. I didn’t think I would be able to squeeze this project into the schedule because I was trying to make up ground after planning in an extra week for a unit on media at the beginning of this term. In order to do this project well I felt like I would need at least a couple of days to set it up and to allow the students to work on it, especially because my lessons today and tomorrow are both in preview of Wednesday’s visit by the Dorchester Bay Youth Force.
Instead I came up with my own term-end project that focused on the different grassroots movements we have studied over the last week or so. We looked at six or seven different grassroots movements, both historical (from the Taking a Stand DVD) and from current events, for which I used material from the Time Magazine “Person of the Year” issue. The students have to choose four of those specific movements and demonstrate their knowledge of each by creating a recruiting poster, poem or rap, written summary, newspaper advice column, political cartoon, or movie script or poster. If I can figure out how to do it correctly I will attach a copy of the template to this post.
I feel bad about changing the project so drastically, but I am glad that they will have a number of different ways in which to demonstrate their understanding of our unit on grassroots campaigns and that they will have a choice as to which movements they want to focus on. I also figured that with DBYF coming in on Wednesday, I should allow at least part of Thursday’s class for recap/reaction, and that leaves at best, just a class and a half to complete what would have been a very intense term-end project. I hope this is alright with you guys, and I apologize, Marcie, for not bringing too much to the table as far as this project is concerned.

hi Henry, thanks for the update. I do understand the need to shift and adjust as we go through any curriculum–especially to the time pressures related to scheduling outside visits (it’s great that they are lined up, though!) or making up for any time from preceding weeks. Still, to put it out there, adjusting the end assessments for the units makes it difficult to maintain a level of parity, fidelity and ‘shared experiences’ that are important for us to build.
Let’s chalk it up to a learning experience for all of us, though… and I’ll make sure I do a better job of trying to help you all avoid the inevitable ‘curriculum crunches’ that do happen. Sound ok?
