My name is Henry Mahegan and I am a first-year teacher at Charlestown High School. I teach two sections of U.S. History II and three sections of Civics for Boston Youth. In addition to my responsibilities in the classroom, I also co-sponsor the school’s EuroTrip Club which plans and fundraises to bring a group of seniors on a one-week trip to Europe every spring. Although this is my first year teaching on my own at CHS, I spent last year in the school as a resident in the Boston Teacher Residency program.
I have always been passionate about the study of history but it was during a unit on the desegregation of the city’s public schools last year that I began to feel strongly about teaching a civics course that would be relevant to teenagers from Boston. The city has a rich history of civic engagement and I am proud to be a part of a curriculum that taps into so many local resources while teaching students how to actively participate in democracy.
Before joining the BTR program in 2010, I spent nearly seven seasons working for the Boston Red Sox, the last four of which were spent in the Media Relations department.
