Setting up for a few hours with S. on a drizzly Sunday afternoon at the nearby coffee place, Java Jos. Wrap up and wind down in steady progression for a number of pieces– my work with my group of teachers in their individual schools and classrooms, the Teaching Ambassador Fellowship, Campaign for Civics work with BPS and the HSTF, and final pieces (of stage one, anyway) of the push towards a teacher leadership pathway though the superintendent’s Office of Professional Development.
Balanced with what continues and what is new– a few months yet with the National Boards standards committee, this Knowledge and Skills of Professional Teaching project, and best of all, thinking of making the summer travel plans more than just plans.
To mention:

Sofra
So old roommate P. is off again, this time traveling to Dallas to do (in initial plans, anyway) a few years of heavy machinery work. L and me meeting up with him early morning at Sofra, the liquor store turned to fancy middle-eastern pastry place, near our old Watertown digs. A simple photo frame (and a Brown logoed note) to wish him well.. and the surprising but good news of L just closing on the purchase of a whole house, no less, in Newton center. Friends moving on in the context of middle eastern pastries, good coffee, and copper drum shaped tables.
A favorite tune on repeat in my car as of late. Bill Charlap at the Village Vanguard, track 4: ‘The Lady is a Tramp.’

Village Vanguard
Take a listen to the opening and close in particular and the light and playful build– patterns building, tension and skill in the slightest keys brushed (their sounds released) against others. Discordant and harmony-ed in all the right ways. So good. The Lady is a Tramp
And lastly, a late-in-coming visit to the St. Andrews complex in the neighborhood.. nicely inhabited now by the Bethel AME congregation. Smiling and welcoming faces and a seat among the chairs arranged in front of a slightly raised stage–a keyboardist, guitarist and percussionist in the back, four singers in front of them, and then the podium with the music director raising song from those on stage, and those of us responding to their enthusiasm. Spoken words from Pastor Ray Hammond. A happy worshiping place. Deliberative, slow-cadenced, and for today, an emphasis/exhortation/prayer/calling to fathers on a Father’s Day.
Happy Father’s Day!
Sunday near end of June (already!): Sofra, a tune, and the church across the street
