Baseball in late October is just good, even if you’re not particularly a sports person. There are the bright stadium lights creating an intensely lit playing field–remarkable really, especially if you happen to drive up to one from a distance in a darkened, fall evening. A glow of Things-Are-Going-On-Here. There’s the appreciation of the motion and physics of the sport, seeing that spinning ball through time-slowed air, the posture of the batter in the box and players in some calculated defensive position in the green behind. You are lucky to have some regional connection to one of the teams on the field or at least, some feeling of wistfulness that your hometown team isn’t competing that night. (I did read somewhere that this is the true mark of a sports fan–to root for a team that’s perpetually and enticingly falling short; more grist for building bonds-of-despair among fellow fans, perhaps).
And when you get to watch Game 2 of the Final Series of the Season with some surround sound and that HD crispness? Well… just lucky.
