S. and I have started walking every day as of late. It coincides with the New Year’s resolution variety of new routines, but in fairness to this nascent habit, we started talking about it earlier than the turn of the new year. (so there!)
Here’s the scoop– Dr. Oz (whose 7 minute workout routine I very much like and have been doing for months now) is all about suggesting that you do 30 minutes of walking a day at a minimum. It can be broken up into little segments throughout the day, but the idea is that the practice is the foundation of starting a healthier lifestyle in terms of exercise and diet. Tired a certain day? Particularly cold or rainy outside? Busy with things to do? Not an excuse, goes the mantra.
So why not?
And so for the past week or so, we’ve been bundling up and heading out in the surrounding neighborhoods before or after dinner, charting new routes and walking through familiar and unfamiliar places. The lovely homes across the way in the Bourne neighborhood of Jamaica Plain, along the gates of the Forest Hills cemetery at darkness (snow covered ground, untouched, receding into the darkened trees beyond) or up the hill by the UMass medical center. Adding an extra loop or two up particularly hilly places.
Conversations you might not normally get to. Greeting neighbors coming in or out of their homes along the way. Reddening of exposed faces, from both the cold, winter evening air and the warming of your body in steady motion. Warmth of home on return.
A routine and company I can definitely get used to.
