Travel days are so much better when you know your longest upcoming flight leg is in the single digits. No marathon 12 or 13 hour trans-Pacific flights this time, thank you very much. I loved the trip to Southeast Asia this past summer, but the long travel times in those cramped seats are pretty dreadful. I still remember the time when I was young, maybe nine or ten, and I was small enough to fit in the space on the floor between my seat and the seat in front of me. And the idea that I’d be able to rest my head on my own seat from that sitting position for some sleep? Bad idea. I remember it took me about two or three days afterwards before I was able to turn my head in any reasonable direction from the way I overstretched my neck. Memories…
Off to Vegas for spring break! Boston to Newark was, well, quick and Newark-y. Nothing remarkable. Flight from Newark to Vegas took about four and a half hours—just about right for S. and me to make it through a few more episodes of the HBO tv series Six Feet Under. And views of fissured desert landscapes from the plane. Giving the new camera a try.
And late afternoon to early evening in Vegas? Bright and warm day in the mid 80s. Driving down the famous Strip and past the iconic Welcome to Las Vegas sign. Passing by the famous hotels and casinos. MGM Grand, the Bellagio, the Luxor (the pyramid and Sphinx one, right?). S. particularly liking the boarded up defunct ones in between them, forgotten and bankrupted single level motels and small gaming places, brown and abandoned. Shells of places.
Really nice digs for the week, though! Thanks M. and D…
Excited to be out here in the Southwest.

Hi James–
Hope you’re enjoying your vacation! You definitely flew in the right direction… How’s everything else going? I’m doing pretty well–things are good at BDEA right now and I’m working on finishing my MFA in Creative Writing. Not sure what’s next, but happy to be where I am. I need to enter the blogosphere–it’s such a great way for folks to see what you’re up to!
Have fun!
