A perfect, slow start to the morning– the kind of start that only the beginning of a good chunk of vacation days without the need to rush off here-and-there brings. Replacing the normal morning routines (the quick set of exercises, the breakfast) with the better version (adding the long non-rushed break between the exercise and the breakfast, for which you actually get to use the stove). That kind of thing.
A drive towards Williams, Arizona for the day. And plans to take a relaxed pace in our travels, since we reserved two nights at the 19th century styled Grand Canyon Hotel on the main street there. A charming little stretch of historic Route 66. (Okay, the very kitsch-y Route 66 these days..) A quick one hour drive away from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim.
Let’s just say we are serious about our the ‘take it easy’ intentions, meriting the comment from the wryly observant S that by mid-afternoon and about four hours out from our start time, we were only about 45 miles away from our starting point and eating soft serve ice cream near the Hoover Dam.
Still, it’s the Hoover Dam and the thing needs to be looked at, right? I was impressed… though for S. not so much. In any case, I appreciated her attempt at being impressed.

S. Overcompensating on the Hoover Dam
Such a pretty landscape to drive through…the Mohave Desert area. A worthy destination itself, really.

Driving though this landscape...

Roads carved through...

A Joshua Tree
And a laid back evening in Williams after going through the Lake Mead and Hoover Dam area and stopping at little roadside places here and there–arriving a little after 6:30 (it all works out after all, no?). Dinner at a Mexican place called Pancho McGillacuddy’s (go figure), looking through a couple Route 66 themed stores, and heading to bed early. Clawfoot tub in the room a bonus.
It’s 3:00 and We’re Only at the Hoover Dam
