Stealing the Thunder

Scene from an elementary math classroom today with the sounds of another group of students joyfully having recess just outside the window; a beautiful spring afternoon, the sound of bouncing balls punctuated by happy yelps.

A math lesson on the topic of making solids from their two dimensional patterns. And a share out session with the teacher asking the small group of students in front of her to predict what 2D shape would create which solid shapes.

One boy pre-empted in his answer by another student. And such an earnest plea in response, halfway between a whine and a song…

‘Stop stealing my thuuuundeeeer!’

A pause and then a look around to see if his directive made any impact on his fellow students or the teacher.

Nothing going.

Images of the elementary students as modern day child versions of the Greek Gods, masters of the heavens and seas. Grabbing each others’ thunderbolts and tridents.

Imagine a younger and plumper version...

Such a good expression. We have to bring that back to more daily usage. You! Stop stealing my thunder!
