Making Choral Responses In Class Even Better

Scene from a classroom this morning as the teacher transitioned students from their writer’s workshop lesson to their class time focused on reading. The routine being for students to start with some independent reading, during which the teacher would conference with individual students.

The teacher giving some ‘white noise’ directions like we do—verbalizing the well-practiced routine for the sake of giving the sense of movement and action. Prompting the dialectic of call and response. But this time, with the added pattern of one girl joyfully adding another layer—verbally surfing through the expected waves of teacher and student talk. Mono to stereo.

“When we’re doing independent reading, should there be any noise?”

Choral response of class: Noooo!

Lone voice: You’re supposed to be quiet! (no response from teacher or other students.)

“When you’re doing independent reading, should you be reading out loud?”

Choral response of class: Noooo!

Lone Voice: You’re supposed to be reading in your head! (still no reaction from teacher or other students.)

She looks around looking pleased, a role all of her own. Inconsequential that no one particularly pays her any mind. Big, big smile on her face.
