Memorial Day Weekend

You know it’s been a pretty good Memorial Day weekend when:

  • The weather’s been perfect, ranging from the mid 60s to mid 70s.  Even a welcome short burst of heavy rain Saturday afternoon, causing friend C. and me to duck into stores along Centre St. instead of the planned walk around the Jamaica Pond.  Trying hats at Salmagundi.
  • You get a couple of bike rides in–one on Friday to the favorite spot in Millennium Park in West Roxbury (with some extra gratuitous lay-in-the-grass time) and the other this morning out to Dover, working to get this biking-perfect route to memory.  The welcome soreness in the legs that tell you you’ve actually made use of them.
  • Baseball x2.  An hour at a batting cage in Watertown and 45 mile per hour pitches feeling like they were coming at 100 mph, with the whiff of the bat through the air and the pop of the ball against the padded backstop.  (To be fair, I did hit a couple here and there, enough to get a nice blister on the left hand.)  An hour or two tossing the ball around in a nearby field afterwards.
  • Barbeque foods x2.  A post baseball trip to the favorite Deluxe Town Diner in Watertown and the classic medium rare burger, fries and the coffee frappe.  And a barbeque later this afternoon at C and C’s house.  (Bring it on).

And with a reminder about the reason we have this day in the first place?  Slowly cycling by a cemetery in West Roxbury this morning, lines of parked cars and individuals tending to graves, fresh flowers and miniature flags in hand…

A good weekend.  A good Memorial Day to you all.
