Limenos are not Lemons

Woke up today in Lima, Peru!  The beginnings of our three week trip through Peru and Bolivia.

Travel from Boston to Lima (bean to the bean) through Miami wasn’t too much of a problem.    (Many thanks for that ride there, K).  You can’t go wrong with starting with the familiar McDonalds iced coffee at the airport–and plane-time wise?  Three hours from Boston to Miami and then a little over five hours from Miami to Lima?  Even with a sauna like cabin interior in Miami before pushing off (with some people vigorously waving those emergency instruction cards like fans), I’ll take that over the superlong flight times to Asia any day.

Logan airport before the start of our trip

Flying somewhere over Cuba

We arranged a ride from the airport to the first place we’re staying, the Wasihpy hostel in the Miraflores neighborhood of Lima, and after a painless walk through immigration, we saw our sign.  The driver practically lit up with a smile when we waved at him, and then we were off driving through the streets of Lima towards our destination.

Our Lima Sign at the Jorge Chavez Airport in Peru

Busted out some of that rudimentary Spanish in conversation along the way (fun) and at one point also stopped at a gas station where people were apparently filling up their cars with natural gas.  Fancy.

‘Mira a los Limenos,’ I called back to S. who was sitting in the backseat (or rather, still clutching on to her things from our weaving in and out of traffic).  Limenos, so I read, are what you call the residents of Lima.  Makes sense.

‘What?’ S. called back.  ‘Lemons?’

Yes, indeed.  Off to a great start here.

hi Sue, I just told her and she started laughing (in a good way, I think??). She tells me to tell you that when she gets there okay, she’ll let you know. (Mom/daughter humor I guess…)

What a fabulous experience! Enjoy! Enjoy! I love seeing the pix! Early in my son’s Air Force career, he went to La Paz in Bolivia. It sounded like an interesting place with a variety of ethnic food choices and fabulous sweaters! Will you also be going to La Paz? We will enjoy the blog. Travel safe! Cynthia

    hello all!

thank you for following us! james is very good at keeping up the blogging, but I promise to pipe in from time to time.

Cynthia- we are already looking for some new sweaters! though it’s not too cold here, there is no heat anywhere, so we’re a bit chilly constantly. i’m also looking forward to some alpaca gloves! we will be visiting La Paz at the start of August, following our border crossing at lake titicaca. we’ll keep you posted!

    love,
    sarah
